About Medical Coding

Medical coders update patient records with information that is used for billing and data management. This is an office-based job that involves reading medical charts and entering the medical codes into the patient’s record. Each time a healthcare provider provides a service, a code is entered for that service. Students enrolled in the medical coding program will complete the curriculum that prepares them to take the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) medical coding certificate test. Students with medical coding certification would be able to pursue job opportunities at both Atrium Health and other healthcare providers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that medical coder job growth will grow 16% between 2016 and 2026. The starting salary averages $34,619 and the average salary of a coder with CPC certification and 13 years’ experience is $54,106. (www.ultimatemedical.edu).
